AS part of Tavistock Carnival week, Tavistock Athletic Club organised the Tavistock Town relays. The popular event, which was held last Thursday, started with fine weather and ended in a thunderstorm with an excellent turnout of 79 senior teams running round the Meadows raising at least £1,000 for the Lions' carnival charities. The evening started at 6.30pm with 36 fun runners who each gained a medal for their one mile jaunt. Next up was the Junior Relay event which had 26 teams taking part. First Tavistock team home was the Year 9/10 boys of Tavistock RFC – Billy McNicol, Ethan Lamerton, George Hillson and Ben Milligan, who completed the course in overall second place. This gave them first place in their age group. Also year 9/10, The Tavistock Athletic Club team of Jade Kinsey, Emma Ryder, Jodie Stacey and Molly Rickwood took first place in the girls' competition. Year 5/6 boys: Dan Luckham, Joe Dix, Leighton Howe and Daniel Mercer were second in the age group as were year 7/8 girls Jenny Milburn, Olivia Bull, Natasha Farrington and Sarah Bull. The second Tavistock RFC Year 9/10 team of James Lewis, Scott Morris, Theo Cousins and Steve Kirby were runners up to their team mates and the Year 11/12 TAC Farrah Group girls – Tess Masselink, Yasmin Steven, Megan Groom and Jennifer Sabine also picked up a second place. TAC had a third placed Year 7/8 girls with Tayla James, Tilly McDowell, Clarissa Nicholls and Lucy Steven taking part. The Year 9/10 girls of Tavistock Swimming Club of Laura Meredith, Gemma Arundel, Olivia Bates and Sarah Teague were third. The senior race was busy, with 79 teams taking part but all went very smoothly, with most of the teams finished by the time the rain started. Tavistock Senior men Joshua Blake, Will Dax, Dean Smith and Adam Tofield took third place with Plymouth AC and East Cornwall Harriers taking the top two spots. The first ladies' team home was also Plymouth AC as was the first ladies' veterans' team. Plymouth vets also won the men's race. BATs entered no fewer than 17 teams into the senior event and their red vests were seen all over the course, having a great time. Organisers of the races and the Tavistock Lions thank all the participants for helping TAC to raise £1,000 for charity.
