BUOYED by the success of this year’s Tavistock Carnival, members of the Lions’ Club of Tavistock have started to plan next year’s event and are anxious for more community groups to become involved.

Procession organisers Lions Jeff Lea and John Dawson said that they were delighted to see groups such as the Bannawell Street Residents taking part and in an attempt to build on this success the club is holding an open meeting on Wednesday, November 9 at the Tavy Club in King Street, starting at 6pm. Any individual or organisation wishing to become involved in next year’s carnival is welcome to attend.

John said that the new route for the procession used for the first time this year proved to be very popular especially with the younger walkers but he admitted that the judging process needed to be revisited following a number of comments such as the spectators not knowing which floats had won which classes.

He went on to say that the open meeting is the opportunity for participants and spectators to make their feelings known so that their input can be considered for next year’s event.

In 2017, Tavistock Carnival Week will start on Saturday, July 8 culminating with the procession the following Saturday. Following on from the success of all the heritage linked events that have taken place in the town over the last year, especially the hugely popular Man Engine, the club has chosen ‘Heritage, Myths and Legends’ as next year’s theme which it considers will give participants huge scope.

Club members look forward to welcoming everybody to their open meeting but ask that those planning to attend e-mail their names and contact details in advance to John Dawson at [email protected] so that he has an idea of the numbers coming. Anyone wishing to have further information ahead of the meeting can call 08458 334807.
