A DEDICATED West Devon community transport volunteer was recently given recognition at a special ceremony.

The Community Transport Awards, organised by Devon County Council, recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to their local community.

Derek Mitchell, of Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS), received a volunteer award after being nominated by Ann Wilson, who said: 'During the past two years Derek has become involved with all aspects of transport run by Tavistock Area Support Services.

'He does a weekly minibus trip to one of the outreach services as well as bringing people into the Anchorage Centre to take part in activities there.

'He drives on some of the many outings we organise through TASS — last year he took a group to the Isles of Scilly, which meant an early start from Tavistock.

'Derek is also involved with the hospital car service and he actually bought a new car soon after starting as a volunteer so that passengers would be more comfortable.

'In last year's Tavistock Carnival procession Derek led the convoy of TASS mobility scooters. He is a one in a million volunteer.'

Derek said that it was 'always pleasant' to be honoured by any sort of award. 'But you do not work as a volunteer to get awards, the awards you do want is the satisfaction that you have helped someone less fortunate than yourself, to help and reassure people on the way to the doctors or the hospital or to take a group out for the day.

'When you have done this and they look you in the eye and say "Thank you, I just don't know how I'd have managed without your help", this is the reward that I get most satisfaction from and I know this is how my fellow volunteer drivers also feel.

'I am flattered that TASS think I am worthy of being nominated. I accepted the award on behalf of all the volunteers at TASS who give of their time freely, week in, week out helping others in our community.

'Joining TASS was one of the best things I have ever done in my life, it is a reason to get up in the morning. I would encourage anyone with a few hours to spare a week to volunteer and help make a difference to someone's life.'
