TAVISTOCK Police have appealed to the honest nature of town residents to hand back any money they may have picked up while walking along Tavistock Canal on Tuesday lunchtime.
A man was seen throwing away a large quantity of £20 notes as he walked along the canal by Tavistock College between 12.30pm and 2pm.
Police initially recovered about £320, believing they had found most of the discarded money. But Sgt Healy said they now believe as much as £1,000 could have been scattered by the man, who was in an emotionally distressed state.
Any school students or other members of the public who recovered £20 notes or saw anyone else picking up notes is asked to contact Sgt Adrian Healy at Tavistock Police Station ? keeping the money without taking reasonable steps to return it could amount to theft.
The money can be returned to the front desk of Tavistock Police Station or to Sgt Healy who can be contacted on 08705 777444 quoting log number 699/04/02.
