IN the Okehampton and district Table Tennis League, last year’s division one winners Tavistock played the young winners of division two, Okehampton C. Although Tavistock only had two players they managed to win 6-4.

Roger Bunkett scored a fine maximum but Cameron Brooking took him to a fourth leg decider. Emily Haskell did well to beat the more experienced Peter Hicks in four legs, with Roger and Peter winning the last doubles for the win.

In division one Bridestowe played Okehampton B — the team of dad Nick Jackson and daughters Naomi and Sarah. Mark Tancock won the first against Nick and Mark Fogerty won the next against Sarah to put Bridestowe 2-0 ahead. Naomi beat Francis Griffiths and went on to score a fine maximum. Nick did well to beat Mark Fogerty and Naomi took the next against Mark Tancock to put Oke 3-2 ahead. Francis levelled to 3-3 against Sarah and Naomi won her third against Mark Fogerty. Francis beat Nick and Mark Tancock won the next against Sarah and joined Mark Fogerty to win the doubles against Nick and Sarah for a 6-4 win for Bridestowe.

In division two Okehampton E lost to Anchorage A 10-0. Anchorage were too experienced for the youngsters.

Milton Abbot Juniors played Horrabridge B. David Stewart put Horrabridge 1-0 ahead against Tom Doidge. George Anderson beat Lesley Coleman and Ang-Harod Benan to make it 2-1 to Milton Abbot. George then beat David for 3-1. Bob Newcombe won the next against Tom. Ang-Harod won her second and went on for a fine maximum. Bob beat George to put Milton Abbot 6-3 ahead. Tom and Ang won the doubles against David and Lesley for a 7-3 win for Milton Abbot.

Another new team, Okehampton D, took on Anchorage B. Dave Wilson was beaten by Luke Bennett but Roger Gilbert levelled at 1-1, beating Frank Cockburn. Mari Baldwin beat Jenny Gilbert to put Anchorage 2-1 ahead. Luke Bennett won his second against Roger and went on to complete a fine maximum. Frank beat Jenny in the next to level at 3-3.

Mari did well to beat Roger and Luke beat Jenny to go 5-3 ahead. Dave pulled another one back against Frank and joined Roger to beat Luke and Mari in the doubles for a fine 5-5 draw.

In division two Gunnislake were at home against Moretonhampstead. Mike Kinger put Gunnislake 1-0 ahead against Ken Underhill in four legs. Michael Alexander lost to David May playing his first game in the league to level at 1-1. The next game was a nail-biter after Jack Flockton won the first two legs against Richard Underhill who fought back taking the next three legs (11-4, 14-12, 14-16) to put Moretonhampstead 2-1 ahead. Ken won the next for 3-1. Michael beat David in the next and went on to complete a fine maximum against Richard. Ken beat Jack to make the score 5-4 to Moretonhampstead. In the doubles Mike Kinger and Jack took on Ken and David. Mike and Jack won the first two legs but Ken and David won the next three for a 6-4 win for Moretonhampstead.
