MEMBERS of Yelverton Tennis Club are set to serve up a great evening on Saturday, June 7 to celebrate the club's 30th anniversary. It was on June 2, 1984, that it officially opened two tennis courts and a clubhouse in Meavy Lane (which was actually then a garden shed) on the War Memorial Field at Yelverton.  Historically there had always been a tennis court on the recreation field but the site was passed over to Yelverton Bowling Club.   At the time of this change there were many courts in the area available for public use but over the years these had disappeared.  By 1982, following a public meeting, it was decided to take action to redress this situation and after negotiations the War Memorial Committee gave permission for the two proposed new courts.  A group of fundraising tennis enthusiasts raised the necessary funds to form a development club, which then evolved into Yelverton Tennis Club in 1983. As numbers increased, it became clear that a further court and a modern clubhouse were needed.  Once more the War Memorial Committee were amenable to the proposals and in 1993 it was agreed to start the fundraising ball rolling again.  There were grants, donations, a levy on club members and fundraising events and on November 5, 1994, the new court and clubhouse with changing rooms, toilet facilities and a kitchen were opened by Councillor Peter Brown. The extra court allowed an increase in the number of teams playing in the Plymouth and District League and to this day the club currently fields three ladies' teams, two men's teams and a junior team.  The club also encourages social tennis and friendly matches and is pleased to welcome players of all standards. Over the years further improvements have been made to the facilities by the club, principally adding floodlights to two courts to allow for play when the light is lacking.  A ball machine was bought for members and as a training aid for club coach Roger Froud. Roger is an LTA senior performance coach and a PTR Professional and an invaluable asset to the club. He runs junior coaching sessions on Saturday mornings for beginners, intermediate and advanced players and also coaching for adults on Sundays or privately by arrangement. There is also a strong social side to the club and various events take place throughout the year, from quizzes, dinners and the popular Pimms Tournament. On Saturday, June 7, to mark 30 successful years, the club is holding a celebratory evening from 7pm to 11pm at the War Memorial Hall in Yelverton. Everybody is welcome. It includes the band House of Strangers, disco and barbecue. Tickets, cost £17.50 and £8 for juniors (including food).
