THE first rain for a while put paid to the opening match of the season at Whitchurch Wayfarers. Local rivals Tavistock were the opponents but a game of table cricket was as far as they got. With more than 120 fixtures of one sort or another to look forward to the season for the Wayfarer teams promises to be a busy one. The Devon League first XI were promoted last year and face new challenges across the county. Ably captained by Martin Credicott they will visit, amongst other places, Seaton, Honiton, Uplyme and Regis as well as Yelverton. Consolidation in the new division will be the first target in the win/lose format. The second XI have a new captain in Andy Wallace. They are looking forward to a more settled group of players as the colts make their way into senior cricket. Tough assignments face them as they are due to play teams from strong Premier League clubs like Bovey Tracey and Plymouth. The ladies' team schedule is also full. This established group of players will be participating in both league and T20 formats throughout the season. Colts cricket remains a vibrant part of the club and their season kicks off at the end of the month with a flurry of games. All the teams are led by qualified coaches with training taking place every week. Indoor training has been going for many months and outdoor starts this coming week. Anyone interested in being involved with the club in any capacity will receive a warm welcome.
