THE Sainsbury's advert on television this Christmas reminded us all of the remarkable truce on Christmas Day 1914 where Allied and German troops put down their weapons to play a game of football – and a delve into the past has shown that Okehampton had its own special football match that same day.

Okehampton selected a team to play against the local football team. The match drew a very large attendance to witness the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
