TAVISTOCK junior triathlete Pete Jarman took part in the challenging shore-line triathlon at Bude last weekend.
More than 250 triathletes competed — the first leg of the event was an energy sapping 500m swim in the choppy sea, followed by a run up the soft sand to the transition area at the top of Summerleaze beach. After taking off their wetsuits it was onto the bikes for the hilly and exposed 11-mile cycle race, which started with a steep climb out of the car park and into the town, then to Widemouth and back along the A39 to Bude.
The final leg was the 3.5-mile run along the canal towpath and around Bude.
Pete, 15, who has taken part in this event three times, won the youth men's trophy. He came 23rd overall and finished in a time of 1hr 07mins 46secs.
Pete thanks Darren Bostock of Okehampton Cycles for all the help with his bike, and to Tavistock Wheelers and Okehampton Cycle Club their help in training.
Pete, a year 10 student at Tavistock College, is a member of Tavistock Athletic Club and Tavistock Swim Club and competed on behalf of Plymouth Triathlon Club.
