BERE Alston Trekkers (BATs) commemorated the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day through three events.

They were joined by a number of friends from other groups to take part in the BATs’ Poppy Run.

This Poppy Run was initially held on November 11, 2011, at 11.11am when a group of BATs and friends marked the occasion by running an 11-mile route starting from the RAF Harrowbeer Memorial at Leg O’Mutton Yelverton and then visiting at another five war memorials (at Crapstone, Horrabridge, Walkhampton, Sheepstor and Meavy).

This year, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, BATs decided to revisit the multi terrain route and invite others to join them to raise money for BLESMA -the British Limbless Ex-ServiceMen’s Association).

Derek Hicks, on behalf of BATs, led a total of 38 BATs and friends, including a number of ex-service personnel, on this commemorative social run which started at 11.15am to allow participation in the act of remembrance at 11am, and to ensure that the runners did not conflict with the acts and services of remembrance at the War Memorials on their route.

Marcia Macey travelled to Penzance to represent BATs in Mounts Bay Harrier’s Remembrance Run which is a four-mile or so beach run (depending on the tide) on sand, shingle pebbles, seaweed and includes a river crossing – she finished in front of St Michael’s Mount. All participants wore red.

Meanwhile, northern BAT Andy Cowden took part in an 11k commemorative road run around Alsager and Sandbach. This included the reading of letters to, and from, the ‘Front Line’.
