TAVISTOCK Squash Club recently held their second annual junior tournament with record amounts of entrants.

In the B section tournament Taunton’s Caitlyn Ampleford was the outright winner with Exeter’s Tom O’Connor as runner up. Two local players, Gabriel Santos-Hanley and Sam Coates, made it through to the third/fourth place playoff, where Gabriel, playing in his first junior tournament, played above expectation to take third place. There were eight entrants in the A section. The format comprised two pools of four followed by a play off to establish the final placements. The A section was won by Exeter’s Charlie Ferraro who beat Charlie Ampleford in the final 2-0 in sets. The third/fourth play off was contested by two boys from Dartington (Tom Read and Felix Partridge) – this proved to be the match of the tournament with Tom scraping through 2/1; 14-12 in the deciding game. Tavistock players, Kieran Savage and Andrei Catrina finished sixth and eight respectively.

Tournament organiser Steve Mooney was delighted with the standard of play and the increased number of entrants. He was grateful to Nigel Eadie of the Pasty House for sponsorship of the event.
