Petroc two
Okehampton ladies’ thirds 4
Teign ladies’ thirds 0
ALTHOUGH Teign were lying a few league places below the home team this had the potential to be a tough match as the visitors had some strong, experienced players in their team.
Oke (pictured in purple and white) were hungry for goals and began the match in attacking style. Viv Weatherington, the central attacker, kept possession and distributed the ball to the wide forwards so they could attack from all angles. Oke’s pressure was rewarded with a penalty corner. A strong strike from Sandy Houston found Joey Drake perfectly placed to hit the ball into the corner of the goal.
For the remainder of the first half determined defending from Teign denied Oke the chance to increase their lead but after half-time, Oke sharpened up their game and soon penetrated the Teign defence. A well angled cross in the circle from Viv Weatherington found Sarah Bazeley unmarked near the left post waiting to score Okes’s second goal.
Teign pushed forward when they had the chance. The Oke right back and their player of the match Sophie Mugliston tackled strongly and moved swiftly into attack when she had possession. Mugliston used her speed to carry the ball swiftly into the Teign circle and have a shot on goal; she pounced on the rebound from the Teign keeper and slotted the ball into the back of the net. Oke used the width of the pitch cleverly with their wing halves Izzy Rowlands and Emily Palmer moving the ball quickly up the pitch. They were unlucky when Eleanor Marvin’s determined play in the circle led to her pushing the ball into the goal but unfortunately just after the whistle had been blown.
Oke bounced back when Emilia Bazeley found herself in space at the top of the Teign circle and her impressive strike left the goalie stranded to seal the victory.
