THE junior section at Tavistock Tennis Club has had a great year. The coaching for members aged between 5- 18 under Rhys Dunsford has gone from strength to strength with numbers increasing every week.

The club say that due to the great success of the coaching programme they were able to enter a team for the Plymouth and District league this year which had not been possible for the last few seasons. Tavistock did superbly, finishing third in their division.

It was a wonderful achievement as none of the players had ever played in inter club competitions before.

A club spokesperson said: We were very proud of their effort and sportsmanship shown at all times. The experience they gained will mean they will do even better next year.

’We played eight matches — four home and four away and we must also thank their brilliant parents who supported and cheered for them every week. So congratulations to Joe Rizk, Issey Hillman, Frankie Petersen, Jonathan Earp, Will Storr, Lewis Critchley and Bertie McErlain.’

At the Junior Club Championship, Joe Rizk was crowned the boys champion and after a close fought battle Issey Hillman narrowly beat Olivia Clark to become the girls’ champion for the second year running.’

The spokesperson added: ’Tennis is a wonderful sport and we want all young people to come down to the club and enjoy the experience. Everyone is welcome and all information is available on our website.’
