IN less than ideal weather conditions on Sunday morning hard working Tavistock Athletic Club members were setting up the track for the last Devon Open meeting of the series. It was too windy for the usual marquees so the equipment garage became the catering headquarters, registration took place within Tavistock Sports Centre and officials donned waterproofs and picked up their weather writers ready to battle the elements. By lunchtime the waterproofs were off and the sun cream was being applied. Athletes were performing well in both track and field events and although numbers were down due to holidays and weather, an excellent day of athletics kept the spectators enthralled. Tavistock AC had won the first three meetings and did not disappoint at this fourth one. Not only did they win on the day, Team Tavistock has won the Devon League Series by a large margin from Exeter, North Devon and Plymouth, which is a substantial achievement for a small town, made possible by the excellent facilities and committed junior and senior members at the club. Now TAC's athletes will be training for sports hall and cross country competitions, hoping to emulate the club's summer successes.
