THE Okehampton and District Table Tennis League saw Tavistock beat Milton Abbot in the final for their first trophy of the 2014/15 season.
The league got under way in the week commencing October 28. In division one Milton Abbot were at home against Bridestowe. The first three games were decided in the fifth leg.
Francis Griffiths put Bridestowe ahead and Tim Westcott levelled against Phil Down 11-9. Mark Fogerty beat Ottila Pochat 11-6 in the fifth Bridestowe won the next four to lead 5-1. Tim won the next against Mark in straight sets and joined Ottila in the doubles winning 13-11. Bridestowe won the match 6-4.
The next match The Mixtures were at home to Horrabridge A Chloe Greenaway won the first against Karen Stevenson 11-8. In the fifth leg John Stewart put Horrabridge 2-0 ahead beating Roni Gallardo in straight sets. Sarah Jackson pulled one back for The Mixtures against Jill Northey. Roni did well to beat Chloe 12-10 in the fifth leg to level 2-2. It was level at 3-3 and 4-4 Karen won the last singles against John to lead 5-4. Chloe and John beat Karen and Sarah in straight sets for a hard fought 5-5 draw.
The last division one match, Anchorage A were at home to Okehampton A who won 6-4 thanks to a fine maximum by Tom Pengelly and two singles by John Squire. Colin Brooker did well to win two singles. Colin Jones and Malcolm Hopkins both winning one singles for Anchorage. Tom and John won the doubles against Malcolm and Colin for a 6-4 win for Okehampton.
In division two, Moretonhampstead were at home against Gunnislake A. The match was re-arranged. In the first game Ken Underhill lost to Michael Kinger 3-2. Paul Brodey lost to Michael Alexander 8-11 in the fifth leg and Richard Underhill lost to Jack 11-9. Also in the fifth leg with the score 0-4 to Gunnislake Ken pulled one back for Moretonhampstead beating Jack in four legs. Gunnislake won the next three singles to lead 1-7. Ken winning the last singles against Michael Alexander. Michael A and Jack beat Ken and Paul in the doubles for a fine 8-2 win for Gunnislake.
The last division two match was Okehampton C against Anchorage B. Okehampton fielded three eleven-year-olds — Josh Parsons, Emily Haskell and Gemma Ker. Josh lost the first in a hard fought 2-1 to the experienced David Wilson. Okehampton took the next eight singles and the doubles for a convincing 9-1 win. Emily and Gemma both scoring maximums in their first ever league match. All three can look forward to an exciting season.
