Cornwall and Devon
Teignmouth 14
Tavistock 39
TAVISTOCK were made to play against the elements in the first half and received the kick off deep inside their own half.
A solid take by inform Adrian Baker gave a platform for fly half Richard West to launch an attack. Good hands from the backs put Dan Luffman into space and he showed his electric pace by scoring from 60 metres, 0-5.
The second try followed shortly after; a bone crunching tackle in midfield by Josh O'Neil rocked the opposition's number eight and allowed Andrew Griffiths to turn the ball over. Ewan Smith moved the ball away from the breakdown quickly and a superb step from Ross Batton took him pass the first line of defence. Luffman popped up on his shoulder to score under the posts. West converted, 0-12.
Teignmouth started chipping away at the lead thanks to poor discipline from the visitors. Tavistock had Andrew Kaka sent to the sin bin and Teignmouth slotted three penalties to bring the score back to 9-12. West replied with one of his own to make it 9-15.
As the game moved towards half time Teignmouth were again on the offensive and near the try line but full back Will Glover produced a stunning tackle to smash the would be scorer into touch and save the try.
The lineout produced another scoring opportunity which Tavistock repelled thanks to great mauling from Jake Chinn and James Bruna. As the referee blew for half time Lloyd James had prevented the ball from being grounded.
In the second half Tavistock began to control the game and with the wind at his back West could play for territory. Wingers David Goodspeed and Charlie Furnival showed great pace chasing the kicks to force the opposition into mistakes. West knocked over a penalty to extend the lead, 9-18.
Again Tavistock's numbers were reduced with James being sin binned. During this period Tavistock played some of their best rugby scoring two tries.
Luffman grabbed his hat-trick in typical fashion; quick ball from the lineout was spun wide, beautiful hands from Furnival created the score slipping the ball back inside.
Smith got in on the action, attacking from the base of the ruck and throwing an audacious dummy to give him the space to score under the posts. West converted both scores, 9-32.
Tavistock lost their focus and Teignmouth scored a try of their own using their larger forwards to make it 14 -32.
However, Tavistock were determined to have the last word. Replacement Doug Lloyd put Luffman in for his fourth try. Lloyd broke the line using a bounce pass which Luffman collected before the defenders could react. West added the extras 14-39 and Tavistock had emphatically ended Teignmouth's home record and extended their winning run to 12 games.
