TAVISTOCK Golf Club hosted the 2013 Devon County Veteran Ladies Golf Association Championship when more than 90 lady veterans from all over the county competed for the trophies. The weather was kind and the course was in excellent condition. Tavistock lady veterans Sally Hills, Shirley Trevena and Carolyn Crawford won the Knowle Shield for the best three joint handicaps - a nett 226.
Another great golfing day was the annual Mixed Open. Topping the prize winners list was Chris and Alice Brown (Royal North Devon) with a superb 49 points, second, from Tavistock, was Graham and Dawn Dennis with 46 pts. Third, also from Tavistock, was Patrick and Roma McMahon with 45 pts.
The best visitor pair not in the top three was Mr and Mrs Stevens from Whitsand Bay with 44 pts and Mike and Sue Coles were the best home pair with 44pts. Best front nine, Mr and Mrs Hardie (Branston Golf Club) with 23pts, best back nine, Gareth and Sara Kendall (Elfordleigh) also with 23 pts. Nearest the pin for men Graham Dennis (Tavistock), ladies nearest the pin, Carol Luscombe (Stover). Men's longest drive, Chris Brown (RND), ladies' longest drive, Alice Brown (RND). Winners of the Betty Young Trophy for the best Tavistock pair were Graham and Dawn Dennis.
In the men's County Golfer Challenge Medal Andy Cunningham in division one had a nett 66, second Andy Hills nett 70 and third was Paul Crump with nett 72.
First in division two was Mike James with nett 71 on countback from Matt Boon and Ken Cole. In division three with nett 70 was Richard Burrows, second Danvers Hough nett 74 and in third place was Mike Watkins with nett 76 on countback from Keith Bridle and Ian Nye.
In the Express and Echo Foursomes Sam Avens and Liz Lyndon scored 39pts and runners up were Maggie Hillman and Bridget Luckham with 37pts. Sam and Liz will represent Tavistock in the final at Okehampton in September.
