TAVISTOCK Amateur Boxing Club junior boxer Leah Howe went to Bodmin accompanied by coach Andy Trebilcock in her first opportunity to represent the club.

Leah showed good composure in the ring and worked well behind her southpaw (left handed) lead right. Her one-two combination was particularly successful, against her orthodox opponent. Although this was an unscored skills bout, Leah showed good potential for her next contest.

This weekend also saw senior boxers Theo Evans and Pete Jarman, accompanied by coach Tony Fennell, travel to Torbay to compete against opponents Marcus Trott and Jake Madelin.

Theo had fought against Marcus last week and won on a unanimous points decision.

Theo has worked hard to improve his skills and fitness and although the bout was even in the opening stages, his close work and higher work rate began to show returns. Such was his dominance, the Torbay boxer was withdrawn by his coach and Theo Evans was declared winner in the second round.

Pete Jarman faced stiff opposition in his bout against Jake Madelin, who until recently held the Western Counties title at this weight.

Both men treated each other with great respect and the action initially was muted while each found their range, Pete always having the advantage in reach.

Madelin has a reputation as a hard hitter and tried to land heavy blows with little success, Pete’s better footwork keeping him out of trouble.

The judges deliberations gave a split decision which, on this occasion, was in the Torbay man’s favour.

Pete is to be congratulated on a spirited performance against a more experienced boxer.
