South West 2

Truro C 2

AFTER two consecutive wins Tavistock hosted third placed Truro C at Mount Kelly. A win would mean elevation to the top half of the league.

Coach Dale Wood introduced an amended formation to address Truro’s strengths. Gott, Campbell, Honey and Cull were joined by Anning and when Truro gained possession this proved effective — making it difficult for Truro to retain the ball in the midfield. The sides were evenly matched after 15 minutes.

A Truro attack resulted in the ball being deflected up in the air, which continued towards keeper Osbourne; he lost sight of it as it bobbled around amongst sticks and legs before spinning over the goal-line as he struggled to locate it. At half time only this slightly odd goal separated the sides.

The second half was also hard-fought and Tavistock came back into the match when Russell built an attack down the left side, crossing the ball into the D where Venton managed a chest-high touch before the ball, once more, bobbled about the keeper’s feet before rattling against the backboards. This was Venton’s third consecutive match on the score sheet and it lifted the home team.

Truro however, defended exceptionally solidly with a back line comprising experience and solid skills. Their ability to clear the ball at speed to other Truro players was impressive and proved decisive when they delivered a counter-attack midway through the second half. The only ‘proper’ goal of the game resulted, giving Truro a lead they managed to hold onto for the remainder of the match.

Tavistock were unlucky not to force at least a draw in this match and seven or eight crosses went untouched as they flashed across the Truro goal. This effective crossing of the ball needs to be capitalised on in the remainder of the season if Tavistock B are to rise above the half-way mark.

Truro now go to the top of the table in South West 2.
