TAVISTOCK and Okehampton Squash Clubs played their annual match where both clubs first and second teams play each other on the same evening for the West Devon Squash Trophy.

The competition is aimed at creating closer ties and hopefully encouraging people in both communities to take an interest in the game and consider getting involved.

This year the first teams played at Tavistock with Okehampton being represented by Arnie Searle, Phil Allin, Phil Kemsley, Simon Ramsey and Dan Yeoman, with Steve Mooney, Steve Tripp, Will Westlake, Andy Howell and Nigel Eadie playing for Tavistock. There was lots of good close squash but Okehampton came out on top winning four games to Tavistock’s one.

The second teams played at Okehampton with Tavistock being represented by Phil Honey, Tom Honey, Richard Baxter, Richard Davies and Robin Burdfield with Shaun Jones, Shane Vallance, Dave Harwood, Jack Barkwell and Sue Stanbury playing for Okehampton.

In a reversal of fortunes Tavistock came out on top, winning four games to Okehampton’s one. This gave a combined score of 5-5 meaning that Tavistock retained the trophy they won last year.

As with previous years, all matches were played in a good spirit and were followed by a meal and a drink at each other’s clubs. Both teams also had new players in their squads, which is hopefully a sign of the current popularity of the sport.
