PLYMPTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL OLD BOYS 2
TAVISTOCK A MEN 0
TAVISTOCK A faced league leaders Plympton Grammar School Old Boys as underdogs but a good win last week meant they were not going to lie down.
PGSOB created chances from the start and though Tavistock tried to respond on the break they struggled to retain possession. PGSOB moved the ball around, looking structured and seeking opportunities while Tavistock made some basic errors and only outstanding work from keeper Osbourne kept early efforts at bay.
After 18 minutes PGSOB scored the opening goal; Tavistock pulled themselves together. They applied pressure to the PGSOB defence, pressing the ball in the danger zone and started winning 50-50 balls. At half-time the game looked open – PGSOB looked stronger and better organised but were being matched for skills.
Tavistock’s midfield and forwards though kept following the ball across to the right. Consequently there was nowhere to go when they won the ball as the left side was empty. PGSOB by contrast held their positions and could swiftly switch the ball to their right and attack. With 12 minutes to go they struck an impressive goal into the top of the Tavistock net, sealing a 2-0 win.
Tavistock A have progressed in a few weeks from heavy losses to giving the league leaders a run for their money. The teams played very similar tactics – PGSOB were simply better at holding their positions in the field and doing the basics well.
