Merit table
Crediton Colts 10
Tavistock Colts 20
THIS was a tough match for a depleted Tavistock Colts team, who were only able to field 14 players.
Crediton started off brightly playing an intense forwards game and were initially quicker in the breakdown than the visitors, with Tavistock failing to force them back over the gain line. Tavistock defended well though, were committed in the tackle and looked dangerous on the counter attack.
Midway through the first half Tavy took the lead thanks to a superb penalty kick from Dave Milligan. Crediton came back strongly to score the first try of the game.
However, almost immediately Tavistock's Kier Murphy exploiting a gap in the Crediton defence to earn the visitors an 8-5 half time lead.
Tavistock started the second half brightly and were successful in driving Crediton backwards at the breakdown, however they could not prevent Crediton from taking the lead from a well worked lineout.
This try finally sparked Tavistock into action. They began to win more ball in the loose and were far more effective in the scrum and lineout.
Most importantly, they were exploiting the strength in their backs, moving the ball quickly around the pitch and wearing down the Crediton pack.
As the game wore on Tavistock applying pressure all over the pitch. They soon capitalised on their hard work, getting the ball wide for George Glover to score. Dave Milligan added the conversion.
With Crediton now chasing the game, Tavistock tackled even harder, forcing more errors, and eventually creating the counter attack that lead to Will Carter scoring a superb breakaway try.
Over the last few weeks Tavy have become increasingly solid in defence and more creative in attack. They have now won three on the trot and if they can continue in this vein stand a good chance of making the play-offs.
