OKEHAMPTON’s teams returned to action in the Devon Mixed Squash League as both of their seasons began to draw to a close.

With an important away victory against relegation-rivals at Tiverton the previous week the first team were looking to consolidate their position against a strong Newton Abbot side.

Playing up at string five Dave Harwood started strongly, but his opponent came through in the end to eventually win 1-3. Dan Yeoman at string four played some good stuff but his opponents fitness came through in the end, with Dan losing 1-3.

Justin Gliddon enjoyed a much needed and comfortable win at string three, winning 3-0 with accurate width and length. Phil Allin at string two had a close match with some great rallies. This turned into a marathon match which Phil eventually won 3-2. Phil Kemsley at string one ran out of steam at the end of his match - suffering a 1-3 defeat. Therefore a creditable 2-3 defeat for the first team, by 9-16 points. The team finish their season next week against top of the table Paignton.

Okehampton second team played their final fixture of the season and finished with a flourish, beating promotion hopefuls Dartington.

At string five Sue Standbury used her boast shot to good effect to beat her young opponent 3-0. Dave Harwood played some good squash at string four, enjoying some good rallies. However, his opponents long reach was enough for Dave to eventually go down 1-3. Jack Barkwell at string three struggled to get into his match – going down 0-3.

Shane Vallance at string two overcame some inconsistency in his play to eventually beat his experienced opponent 3-1 and Shawn Jones at string one also enjoyed a victory by the same scoreline.

Therefore a 14-8 win for the seconds - the team expecting to finish three or four places from the bottom.

The teams are looking for new players to join them next season - if anybody is interested in playing team squash contact the club.
