THE tenth Son-Rise cup for Autism football festival kicks off over May 23, 24 and May 25 at Tavistock College and Tavistock AFC.
The event has grown rapidly over the years, from two teams playing for a cup and helping a local Tavistock boy with severe autism, to now the biggest football festival in the West of England. Over the years it has helped and entertained many people and this year is set to eclipse previous tournaments.
IN 2005 the event is aimed at promoting Action4autism, Local Disability football, supporting Help4Heroes and Devon Air Ambulance.
Co-founder Allen Lewis said: 'Seeing more than 1,500 children and adults playing and enjoying their football at this event is marvellous. The smiles, the kit colours, bright new footballs and around 25 referees each day blowing whistles are what makes this event so special.
'Tavistock's dedicated local businesses are the event committee's biggest asset as they support the festival to the full! Without them it wouldn't happen.'
The first day will see children and youth play out their tournaments on the college, Tavistock Primary school and Tavistock AFC Grounds. The second day will host the men's seven-a-side, ladies's tournament and the girls' matches.
In the evening Tavistock AFC's Langsford Park will be the venue for the tenth Son-Rise cup charity match kicking off at 7pm. The champions, Tavistock Tyres, will battle out against Graham Goldring's 'Grub Up' side. This match, always well supported, promises to be a cracking game! Day three will see the Tavispecials disability squad take on their old rivals and friends Newton Soccability FC on Langsford Park.
