Devon B Tavistock firsts v Bideford IN this top of the table clash, Tavistock first team welcomed second placed Bideford to The Ring on a hot afternoon. If batting second, anything less than 250 was seen as achievable and Tavistock duly won the toss and inserted Bideford. The home side's training during the week centred on getting the process right and showing character. Tavistock bowlers Thokozani Peter and Lee Baker duly delivered. At drinks, both had bowled seven overs each and conceded a miserly 11 runs each. Bideford knew they were well behind par and had to change the way they were playing. With three quality spinners in the team, Tavistock knew that chances would come. With the ball turning and big shots being played, three wickets were taken before the next drinks break, but still Bideford were well below where they needed to be. The final 15 overs bought six wickets. Shaun Daymond bowled particularly well for his five wickets, turning the ball big at a good pace. Jamie Stephens with his subtle variations added another three wickets to his ever growing tally this season. Danny Goldstone was tidy and picked up a wicket. The most impressive aspect for Tavistock was the fielding; an area that is worked on relentlessly week in week out. Individuals were given targets and challenges for the innings and the intensity and quality of fielding was outstanding, led by Jonty Newton, Danny Goldstone and Aaron Churchill. The umpires said it was by far the most impressive fielding performance they had seen outside the premier division. Set 166 to win, the challenge as ever was to get through the new ball. Dom Scaglioni opened with regular Ian Gray and they got off to a flier. Chanceless and fearless stroke play took the score to 77 before Gray was out for 46 in the 15th over. When Scaglioni went for a superb 56, there was a slight wobble but Jamie Stephens 15 not out and Aaron Churchill in his new position batting at seven effortlessly scored 23 not out off 15 balls to see Tavistock home for an impressive win.
