AFTER a prolonged period of wet weather, the sun paid a welcome visit to Tavistock earlier this month for race two of the Tavistock Area Primary Schools Cross Country Series.

It contributed towards an exciting cross country event on Whitchurch Down.

The course was tough, as ever, starting at the football pitch on the Down and taking the pupils up the steep hill to the Pimple and back, including a run round the football pitch, before finishing, for the fun runners of years 3 and 4 and the year 5/6 runners went even further. They ran past the Pimple and on almost to Tavistock Cricket Club, before turning and coming back.

Both runs were well attended with more than 200 children taking part, including a guest team from Mount Kelly Prep School.

The support from teaching staff and parents was noisy and motivating and greatly helped to create an atmosphere of excitement which encouraged the youngsters to give their all to win points for their teams.

The top five individual results of the year 5/6 races were: Boys -

1 William White (Whitchurch); 2, Jed Hutchings (Mount Kelly Prep);

3, Nicolas Maczugowski (St Peter’s); 4, William Elliott (Tavistock);

5 Joel Lake (Tavistock). Girls - Matilda Riggott (Mount Kelly Prep); Georgia Burton (Mount Kelly Prep); 3, Hannah Walker (St Peter’s);

4 Emma Luckham (Whitchurch); 5 Jessica Griffiths (St Andrew’s).

After two races the team positions are: Boys - 1, St Peter’s; 2, Whitchurch; 3, St Andrew’s; 4, Tavistock; 5, Mary Tavy and Brentor.

Girls - 1, St Peter’s; 2, Whitchurch; 3, Meavy; 4, Tavistock; 5 Bere Alston. Overall team positions after two races – 1 St Peter’s; 2, Whitchurch; 3 Tavistock; 4 Meavy; 5 St Andrew’s.

Organisers OCRA thank Lindsay Hobbs of Whitchurch Primary School for organising the event and Martin Exley-Deane and Allan Herdman for laying out the course and providing the results. The last cross country event of the series will be at Princetown today.
