TAVISTOCK sailor Angus McPhie with his crew celebrated winning the Royal Western Yacht club's 1884 division one IRC CUP. The series consists of 22 races which took place in Plymouth Sound during last summer.
Angus McPhie, and his crew of students, won the closely fought event with the windward and leeward course which keep the fleet of 20 yachts close together.
The Tavistock optician said: 'This makes for tight racing and close finishes. It's not unusual for the leading three or four places to be less than 60 seconds apart.
'The series take place from April to September and is a closely fought event . The weather may vary from a calm evening where the fleet is drifting around in less than 10k or a windy evening where the gusts can reach over 30k. If the wind is stronger than this the racing is cancelled; the risk of damage or injury is to high.'
