Totnes 3

Tavistock 74

TOTNES began the game strongly and were able to contain the ball around the breakdown; Tavistock's defence coped easily and when the mistake came Tavistock broke out with lethal speed. Richard West moved the ball into space and Dan Luffman sprinted the length of the field outstripping various tacklers to score. West converted and added another quick penalty to make it 10-0.

The home side played with determination and made Tavistock work hard to gain possession without really threatening their line. Tavistock's next score came from Ben Hadfield, the debutant showing pace and power. Tavistock built the phases through the forwards; Jason Ward, Lloyd James and Jake Chinn giving a masterclass in recycling quick ball. Tavistock then moved the ball wide with quick hands from the influential Doug Lloyd and Hadfield rampaged over the whitewash, 15-0.

The home side again when Andrew Kaka turned the ball over close to Totnes' line and moved the ball out to the grateful Adrian Baker who ran unopposed to score under the posts, West converted 22-0. Totnes struck a well dropped goal 22-3. Tavistock responded immediately, Andrew Griffiths taking a good restart catch and fed George Rodgers who tore down the wing and popped the ball back inside with exquisite timing to allow Luffman to score his second. At half time Tavistock led 27-3.

Tavistock had far more dominance and increased the accuracy of their play in the second half and ruthlessly added seven unanswered tries. They stuck to their game plan; with the forwards sucking in the defence and then releasing the faster runners out wide. Charlie Furnivall linked well with Hadfield when scoring his second. Soon after Furnivall was on the end of a flowing move — West and Lloyd combined nicely to open up the defence allowing him to score.

Tavistock's Smith cleaned up the loose ball at the back of the scrum and threw an outrageous dummy and waltz over for his score. Mark Friend at number eight scored the first try for the forwards when he linked well with the impressive Lloyd. The forwards had their second try when Duncan Law was on the end of a move to fall over the line for the try.

Tavistock heaped more misery on the Totnes left wing as they exposed him time and again; Furnivall showed his electric pace to score in the corner and the biggest cheer of the day came when Hadfield completed his hat-trick.

David Goodspeed increased the pace with superb running lines and offloads, creating panic in the Totnes defence. Luffman was not to be outdone in the scoring stakes as he matched Hadfield by completed another hat trick.

Tavistock rounded off the match in style with Lloyd scoring the try of the day. Lloyd began the move deep in his own half and linked well with teammates before collecting a loose pass 40 metres out. Lloyd accelerated to the line to round off a wonderful individual performance. West converted five of the second half tries.
