Brixham 26
Tavistock first XV 5
WITH a late change of fixture, Tavistock travelled south to play higher league opposition in Western Counties outfit Devonport and National league three side Brixham in two, 40 minute games.
In front of a sizeable crowd in glorious conditions, the Moorlanders took on the semi-professional Brixham in the opening fixture.
Knowing it was going to be a tough task Tavistock fronted up well and defended heroically for the first 20 minutes only for the deadlock to be broken on the stroke of half time as the Fishermen scored from close range.
Notable in defence were Darren Guppy and Josh Langton who racked up a number of tackles and PJ Wilcox who was excellent under the high ball.
The second half saw Brixham raise their game and score against the run of play despite dominance at the scrum from Tavistock.
It was the final play of the game that was most memorable for Tavistock as a series of well recycled phases saw Ben Hadfield draw and release part time winger Ash Toll to finish excellently in the corner.
Devonport Services 12
Tavistock 22
AFTER a 40 minute rest where the home side lost out to Devonport Services, it was Tavistocks turn to take on their local rivals.
With another strong start to the game, it took no longer than six minutes for the Moorlanders to get on the score sheet, good build up play from Joe Hair and Guppy in defence saw Hadfield and debutant Phil Wilson link well to release captain Andrew Schuttkacker over the whitewash.
Devonport did hit back with a couple of quick tries from close quarters but Tavistock’s improved fitness proved strong and a dominant set piece inside the opposition 22 led to a patient attack and the returning Jack Glover sniping over for a fine individual finish.
