Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East Appledore 0 Tavistock AFC 1 THE Lambs came out on top in a closely contested game, to inflict a second defeat for the Fishermen this season, as Tavistock returned to winning ways. It was the home team that had the advantage in the opening 15 minutes, and had a couple of half chances to open their account, but some resolute defending kept them at bay. In the 16th minute the home team almost opened the scoring when a long ball down the middle caught the Lambs square at the back and Jenkins broke free but his lob over the advancing Piper ended up going well over the bar. The Lambs' first real threatening attack on the home goal came in the 22nd minute when Kelvin Fyneboy beat three defenders, but his shot went agonisingly inches wide of the target. The Lambs were now getting their passing game together and were unlucky not to take the lead in the 34th minute when good work from Dan Follett resulted in Fyneboy's shot being cleared off the goal line. Just before the interval centre back Lewis Daw collected the ball on the half way line and made a penetrating run through the middle but his powerful shot from 25 yards was well saved by Rigler in the home goal. Neither side could break the deadlock before the half time whistle. The Lambs had their best period of the game in the opening quarter of the second half and put the home defence under some considerable pressure. In the 54th minute a fine move between Farnham and Follett, resulted in Fyneboy cutting inside the penalty area and fire a shot low into the goal, to give the Lambs the lead. The game continued to flow from end to end with few chances being created by either side as both defences were looking very compact. The nearest the home team came to equalising came in the 74th minute when Sam Marsh got free but his fierce shot was turned over the bar by Martin Piper. Kelvin Fyneboy had a great chance to make the game safe for the Lambs in the 86th minute when a Carlton Farnham pass found him free but his shot flew wide of the target. The home team continued to press for the equaliser but the Lambs' defence held firm and restricted the home attack to long range shots. The final whistle blew with the Lambs collecting all three points from one of the teams fancied to win the league this season. This was by no means a classic but the Lambs stuck at their task and just about deserved to win what was a very close contest.
