THERE was yet another good turnout from Okehampton Running Club over the weekend at the Cornish Marathon, the Drogo 10 and the Gosport Half Marathon.
Places for the Cornish Marathon, the final race in the Cornish Grand Prix Series, sold out well before the closing date. The heavy showers that were forecast did not materialise, leaving perfect conditions to tackle the scenic but tough 26.2 miles over Bodmin Moor.
Nick Seccombe put in a great run to finish first of the ORC runners in 3.16.04, a whopping 51 minutes faster than his marathon debut over the same course last year. Paul Carter just caught Roger Voaden to finish in 3.24.10 with Roger in 3.24.26. Rob Kelly, who had run with these two all the way, finished in 3.26.55 taking nine minutes off his time of last year. Marilyn Cooper put in a steady run to finish second FV55 in 4.18.49 and Chris Aylen completed in 4.38.34.
The Drogo 10 is a favourite for ORC with its challenging course in the Teign Valley finishing with the infamous climb up the Hunters Path to the finish. There were no less than 14 members taking part in this year's race, with two of them in the top 20 finishers. First for ORC was Rob Hicks who finished 14th overall in 1.06.55 with Andy Vallance 18th overall in 1.08.50. This was a strong field of 496 runners, the course record being broken by Johnny Gilby from Derbyshire AC in 57.37.
Other ORC times: Jeremy Tandy 1.21.12, Mervyn Rice 1.26.05, Jean-Paul Quertier 1.28.56, Jason Ewing 1.31.41, Mary Moore 1.38.22, Jane Jackson 1.39.02, Mike Westland 1.41.19, Mags Jarvis 1.42.00, Brian Welham 1.43.55, Christine Fritsch 1.44.20, Kerry Morashti 1.46.05, Alan Luffingham 1.53.15.
At Gosport Half Marathon John and Anne Binns got soaked in the rain but enjoyed good support from the crowds who mistook them for Fareham Crusaders who have the same colours as ORC. They have been collecting PBs recently and each of them added another on the half marathon, John finishing in 1.45.59 and Anne in 1.47.19.
