Okehampton ladies thirds 1

Mannamead ladies seconds 0

THE Okehampton ladies’ third team travelled to Plymouth on a warm Saturday morning to take on Mannamead second team. Earlier in the season Oke had lost by one goal to them, so they were hoping to get some points from this fixture.

Oke had the majority of the possession early in the game with midfielder Sarah Marvin pushing forward and delivering some quality passes to forwards Sarah Bazeley and Eleanor Marvin. The solid Mannamead defence denied Oke converting this pressure into goals.

In this end to end encounter Mannamead were quick on the break, forcing Oke to drop back and defend. The home team attacked the Oke goal and were rewarded with a penalty flick when the ball hit a defenders foot on the line. Oke’s young keeper and player of the match, Ella Kaye showed her excellent goalie skills when she coolly deflected the flick to keep her team in the game.

Oke retaliated with determined attacking play from Nicky Strawbridge. She powered forward into the Mannamead circle outwitting the defenders with her nifty stick work before passing to Viv Weatherington, who was perfectly placed in front of goal to slip the ball past the Keeper giving Oke the lead.

The home team fought back but strong tackling from Anna Luxton and close man marking from Melissa Pinfield cut out their attack.

Annie Strawbridge in her debut match for Oke used her blistering speed to attack down the right wing and cross the ball to Eleanor Marvin who moved well off the ball to find space. Only strong goal keeping from Mannamead pre-vented Oke from increasing their lead.

Oke were pleased to claim the win which sees them move up to seventh place in the league.

OKEHAMPTON Hockey Club ladies’ thirds played their last league game of the season on Saturday beating Truro 7-0 with a hat-trick from Sandy Houston, two goals from Nicky Strawbridge and two goals from Viv Weatherington.

The team have finished sixth out of 12 in the West Women’s Trelawney two league.
