TWO Okehampton Running Club members took on some of the toughest hills Dartmoor has to offer in the 32 mile Dartmoor Discovery.
This is the UK’s longest single lap road Ultra Marathon and has taken on a cult status, becoming a ‘must do’ race for runners. Starting in Princetown the first half of the race has considerably more downhill than the second half which is relentlessly uphill.
Okehampton’s Robert Kelly is no stranger to this gruelling race and improved on his last year’s time to finish in an excellent 4 hours 43 minutes 13 seconds. Nick Seccombe was running his first Discovery and his first Ultra and had a great run coming in only a minute later in 4.44.14.
Okehampton runner Margaret Jarvis had travelled a little further to take part in the Grasmere Gallop Trail race in the Lake District with her daughter Sarah.
Having run the 10k option on two previous occasions, she decided to tackle the 17k one this time. Here the runners can enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lakes, taking in Loughrigg Terrace, Fell and Tarn on the route out and returning to Grasmere via the shores of Rydal Water and Grasmere lake.
Parts of the route had been badly eroded during the floods this year making the going tricky underfoot. They both did extremely well, Mags finishing in 1.52.58 to win the FV60 age category while Sarah won the First Lady prize and came second overall.
