Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East

Galmpton United 4

Okehampton Argyle 2

IN this entertaining and exciting match Argyle played their full part but ultimately they were undone by some uncharacteristic defensive slips.

However, the team played some good football and matched their hosts throughout, but in the end the points went to a very good Galmpton side, who are the league's form team with eight wins out of eight in 2012.

The first half was a superb end to end affair with both teams committed to attack and both producing some tremendous passing movements. Galmpton struck the bar after five minutes and two minutes later Argyle had keeper Harry Geering to thank for keeping them level with a fine save.

The visitors fought their way back with Brad Ausden and Luke Alden looking dangerous down both wings. Unfortunately, after putting Will Hawking away down the right with a fine ball, Ausden had to come off with a hamstring injury. His replacement, 16 year old Toby Gostling slotted into midfield and soon made his mark and central, with midfielder Steve Madge moving out to the wide position on the right. Luke Alden continued to trouble the Galmpton defence with his mazy runs down the left and the home keeper Lamsin kept the match all square with two superb saves from Alden efforts.

Galmpton took the lead when the Argyle defence failed to cut out a routine corner and John Potter nipped in at the far post for a tap in goal. The visitors came back immediately and Lamsin produced yet another outstanding save from Gostling's blistering 20 yard shot to preserve the home side's narrow lead at the interval.

Argyle were slow out of the blocks after the break. In the 47th minute Galmpton increased their lead when Matt Mortimer misjudged a through ball and allowed Dan Rankin to race through and lob the ball over the advancing Geering from 20 yards, despite a great attempt by captain Dale Chadwick to clear the ball from the line which saw him collide with the post.

Minutes later, Argyle had a great chance when Potter handled in the area but Mortimer's woes were compounded when Lamsin saved his penalty kick.

Argyle brought on substitutes Dave Youlden and Alex Wren to try to save the game. On the hour Alden did well to keep the ball in on the left touch line finding Ed Squire with his headed pass. Squire surged forward before releasing the ball to Youlden who fired home from just inside the area.

Minutes later, the Argyle's hard work was annulled by another defensive lapse when Dale Chadwick misjudged a through ball and Rankin ran through to score with another lob.

To their credit, Okehampton kept pushing forward and Alden once again brought a good save out of Lamsin. When Mortimer off injured for Argyle, the home side exploited the man advantage when Alex Bayliss burst clear on the right to fire home a fierce shot.

Argyle had the last say when Youlden fired home a good goal from the edge of the area with minutes remaining.

This was a fine game of football played in a sporting manner and excellently controlled by referee Richard Greenwood.

Argyle will be disappointed with the result but they put together some fine attacking moves with Alden always a thorn in Galmpton's side but man of the match must go to home keeper Lamsin for a faultless display.
