Okehampton Ladies A 8
Newton Abbot B 1
OKEHAMPTON Ladies' tennis team played against Newton Abbot B last week. Having done well in the last match and gaining number one spot in Division 5, Okehampton wanted to try and retain this position and gain maximum points.
Beth Dennis and Kath Bolt started off well against the number one pair and took the first set easily 6–2. The opposition employed some good tactics in the second set and pushed the Okehampton pair which resulted in a tie break at six games all. Beth and Kath regrouped and dug deep and eventually won 7-6. They then romped to victory in the second match 6-2, 6-1 — gaining four valuable points.
Jackie Jarvis and Angela Herrod-Taylor played the number two couple first and won 6-1, 6-1. They then played stronger opposition and struggled to gain any consistency. They battled valiantly but were defeated 3-6. Determined to eliminate errors, they upped their game and took the next set 6-2. They entered into the ten point championship tie break with renewed vigour and won 10-7. Okehampton earned another eight points.
Tunnels A 5
Okehampton Men's A 4
OKEHAMPTON Men's A tennis team travelled to Tunnels in Exeter for their second league match of the season.
Stuart Jarvis and Paul Love stormed through the first match 6-1, 6-3. The match against the opposition's first pairing was a much closer affair and the Okehampton team went down 4-6. The match looked to be slipping away at 2-4 down in the second set but Stuart and Paul dug deep to win 6-4. And with some scintillating play the pair won the championship tie-break (10-2).
Daniel Howell was called up to the first team to partner Scott Green but lost the first match 2-6, 1-6. The second match was closer but the youthful pair went down 1-6, 3-6, resulting in a 4-5 loss overall. The team picked up four points in both matches, leaving them mid-table.
Tiverton B 8
Okehampton Men's B 0
THIRTEEN year old Josh Parsons made his debut for Okehampton B in partnership with his father, Steve, in an away fixture to Tiverton B. Although they lost both their matches in straight sets they did take several games off the opposition's first pairing.
John Jarvis and Martin Pearce played two gruelling matches and play wasn't completed until 9.50pm. Despite taking two of their sets to tie breaks and gaining a lead in both they failed to win a set. This was a disappointing 0-8 defeat but Okehampton B hope to bounce back in their next match at home to Victoria Park (Exeter).
Seaton 4
Okehampton Mixed 4
THE Okehampton mixed tennis team travelled to Seaton for their first league match of the season where the strong, gusty wind and unfamiliar astro-turf surface provided a severe challenge.
Stuart Jarvis and Kath Bolt romped through their first match in straight sets. Their game against Seaton's first pairing proved much more challenging and they lost a close fought encounter 4-6, 4-6. John Jarvis and Elizabeth Ryder also found the opponents' top pairing too strong but rallied to win their second match 6-2, 6-3. Overall a 4-4 draw seemed a fair conclusion to an enjoyable evening of tennis.
