TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held their annual End-of-Year Informal Open Tournament on Saturday.  This proved so popular that all eight courts saw action. 

A Swiss ‘round robin’ was the form and there was a military theme to the eventual winners, Flight Lieutenant Sarah Lucas and Sub-Lieutenant Doug Wilkie, triumphing over Lt Commander Rick Read, RN Retired playing with his wife Jenny, in a floodlit final on the centre court. 

Sarah Lucas was once a junior at the club – now she plays for the RAF and the hand-eye coordination honed on our local courts may also come in useful as she prepares for the final stages of her military flying training. 

The tournament also saw a father/son doubles pairing. 

Cold, damp days are not so encouraging for outdoor tennis, but come the spring the club will be launching initiatives to encourage more adult and junior beginners to take up the sport.
