MATTHEW Lake from Tavistock finally achieved his long term goal of achieving his 1st Dan black belt, with the South West Kickboxing Academy (SWKA) based in Tavistock.

Matt during his time under the expert eye of 3rd Dan Steve Lilley has rapidly improved his abilities in kickboxing but also developed as a person with all his hard work, overcoming many struggles. During the past 12 months Matt has attended national fight days through Martial Arts All Styles (MAAS) and trained with legendary UK martial artist and Balck Belt hall of fame 10th Dan Soke Brian Dossett, a pioneer in martial arts.

Matts 1st Dan grading consisting of written tasks, complex drills to test his concentration, fitness, flexibility, and overcoming multiple opponents during bouts. Matt has also spent time learning about becoming a kickboxing coach.

Head coach Steve Lilley said: 'Matt's hard work and dedication during his training has been impressive. I hardly recognise the person who came to start training with me two years ago as a blue belt.'
