Ottery St Mary

IN this high scoring encounter on a perfect batting pitch, both sides were indebted to just two batsmen for their totals.

Ottery St Mary  lost Edward Fowler for a duck with the score at just two before former Devon County veteran John Tierney marched to the wicket and made his intentions clear as along with Lewis Townsend the pair set about the Chagford bowlers.

They added 194 runs for the second wicket, as Chagford skipper Del Lammonby switched his bowlers in trying to make a breathrough and a score approaching 400 looked on.   He finally introduced Duncan Manners-Chapman in his first league game for the club, and there was almost instant results as he bowled John  Tierney for a hard hit 88 before the then dismissed Lewis Townsend for his excellent 110 along with Matthew Reed (0), Sam Lynch (9) and Jody Clements (7).

Lammonby returned to the  attack and picked up two quick Wickets along with one from Steve Sizmur as Ottery SM reached 279-9 in their 45 overs.     Duncan Manners-Chapman finished with 5-29 in his nine overs and Lammonby 3-43.

In reply Chagford lost Peter Holland to another former Devon County veteran Mark Woodman for nought in the first over, and Paul Penberthy (8) and David Penberthy (1) to leave Chagford on 60-3.

Divan Marais and Jon Wright advanced the score to 101 before Wright well caught for 16.    Del Lammonby then joined Divan Marais and together and they attacked the bowling and a Chagford win was on the cards.

However Marrais was caught on the midwicket boundary off Towsend for 88, and Matt Bowes (5). Manners-Chapman (0) and Steve Sizmur (4) soon followed.

Young Luke Mortimore joined Lammonby, with Lammonby smashing the bowling to all corners of the ground, and with Mortimore intent on keeping his wicket intact Chagford reached their target of 280 for the loss of eight wickets with four overs to spare.

Skipper Lammonby had an excellent game as he added 97 not out to his 3-43 while Marrais contributed a fine 88 — although 50 extras helped the Chagford cause.

Mark Woodman for Ottery finished with 3-52 and William Harrison 3-57.

This success leaves Chagford third in the league with wins out of five matches.
