Tavistock firsts 2

Marjons B 1

THIS was the hockey game everyone had been waiting for, a top of the table clash with local rivals Plymouth Marjons.

Tavistock, who lay three points behind their opponents at third in the table, were desperate for a victory that would put them right back in the race for promotion.

The game started well for Tavistock, who fired wide a few early chances, one landing to Fenwick who struck the ball just past the post after a well-timed interception and lay-off from playmaker Honey.

The game soon evened out and both sides played at a high intensity moving the ball with pace and conviction.

It was not until the last five minutes of the half that Tavistock came closest to breaking the deadlock, forcing a fine save from the Marjons' goal keeper.

Tavistock came into the second half fired up and determined to score first. This, however, failed as Marjons took a fine goal from an individual piece of skill that left the Tavistock keeper rooted to the spot.

Things could have been worse for the home side as another goal flew into the Tavistock net, however, it was disallowed by the second umpire for an unseen foul in the D.

Tavistock refused to give in and continued to create chances in their opponents' D. They soon led to a penalty flick which Fenwick calmly slotted past the goalkeeper.

The momentum was now with the home side which they capitalised upon.

Henry Chamberlain professionally powered home a half chance opportunity into the backboards sending the home support wild.

After a nervy few last minutes, in which keeper Matt Graham pulled off a tremendous save from a Marjon penalty flick, the home side saw out the pressure and came out victorious.

This result has pushed Tavistock up to second, putting them in a automatic promotion spot.
