THIS is the first time the Devon County ASA Championships have been held at the new facilities in Plymouth, The Life Centre, and Kelly College had 41 swimmers competing at this annual event, which this year spreads over three weekends.
The swimmers gave a good account of themselves with the following results at this first weekend and included six championship wins, three junior championship wins and 12 age group wins. Kelly swimmers also achieved 187 personal best times
Kelly College's Chloe Barrow (14) was in excellent form taking the 50m butterfly Championship in a time of 28.88 seconds, beating a 11 year-old college record for 14 year -olds. Chloe was third in 100m freestyle and second in the 400m freestyle and junior champion in both these events. Stephanie Reynolds (17) had four championship finals, winning three of them, the 100m free, 400m free and 200m backstroke and second in the 50m backstroke. Ollie Willis (17) had three championship finals. Ollie's best result was the 50m backstroke final where he won gold in a time of 27.02 seconds. George Humphrey (17) reached five championship finals, 100m free, 200m IM, 50m backstroke, 200m fly and the 200m breaststroke. In the 200m breaststroke George took the gold medal in a personal best time of 2 minutes 22.91 seconds.
Thomas McLagan (16) reached the championship finals in four events with a second in the 200m IM and third in the 50m backstroke and 200m breaststroke. Taku Chaza (12) claimed age group gold in three events, the 100m free, 200m breaststroke and 200m IM. Cara Layden, 13, reached the championship final of the 400m freestyle where she produced a personal best time of 4.34.25 to place fourth. She was also fourth 200m backstroke final in 2mins 24.05secs. Cara also claimed gold in the age group final, 1.00.10. Cara's twin sister Jemma took bronze in the 100m freestyle age group final and was fourth in the 200m backstroke. Nathan Linden (12) took gold in the group final and second in the 100m free, and third in the 200m IM. Georgia Jones (14) produced a personal best time to be placed seventh in the 50m backstroke championship final and claimed silver in the age group final of the 50m butterfly in 32.29secs.
Georgia Martin (12) won two gold and a silver medal in the age group finals; Jack Hutchin (11) swam 12.98 seconds faster than he had even done before to claim gold in the boys 11 year old 200m IM while Toby Stanyer (15) won gold in the 50m backstroke with a time of 30.08. Sam Lewis (17) won gold in the boys 16 and over 200m breaststroke in a time of 2.36.86 and Ben Staig (13) took gold in the 200m breaststroke age group final in 2.42.31 and the 200m IM final in 2.20.77.
