MOUNT Kelly pupil and City of Plymouth Athletic Club member Jed Hutchings has been selected to represent Great Britain in the 2018 Laser Run World Championships.
Laser run is part of the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon. Athletes are required to alternate between running and shooting a laser pistol with distances varying between age groups.
Jed, aged just 11 and who lives in St Dominick, competed in the British Championships in Dorset where he convincingly won the U13 boys category in a time of four minutes 27 seconds. He has now been selected to compete in both the individual competition and the mixed relay.
His mother Rachel said: ‘Jed has done amazingly well. It was only six months ago he took up the sport. He saw his City of Plymouth team mate Annabel Denton who represents GB in the pentathlon and decided to give laser running a go, which combines shooting and running.
‘He first competed in June at the South West Championships in Bristol and then went onto the British Championships in Dorset earlier this month and now he’s off to the World Championships, but he doesn’t get nervous at all and just takes everything in his stride.’
The Laser Run World Championships will be held in Dublin on September 28 to 30 and Jed will join more than 450 competitors from more than 20 countries to compete in this exciting event.
Jed told Times Sport: ‘I am really excited about going to the World Championships. I have been running for a few years with my school and athletics club but have only just started to shoot so I was very surprised when I became South West champion and now British champion in the modern pentathlon’s Laser Run. I know the competition is going to be very tough at the World Championships but I am really looking forward to wearing my GB vest and competing in Dublin.’
