OKEHAMPTON Ladies' Hockey Club hosted their tournament on Sunday for the second year. Local teams invited to play were Launceston, Tavistock, Exe, ISCA and Dawlish. Unlike the rainy day last year it was extremely hot and at several points throughout the day play was made almost unbearable. However, it did not deter the enthusiasm of all the players. Starting early in the morning, the initial games provided little in the way of determining early winners with nearly all of the games with scoreless draws. But as the temperature rose so did the number of goals. Dawlish came through as early leaders with ISCA close behind, but local teams Tavistock and Launceston were close on their tails, challenging the leadership. The Okehampton team endeavoured to prove their worth and defend their title but despite a mixture of young and experienced players it was not to be their year. The last two matches of the day became the deciding ones. ISCA and Dawlish were neck and neck on points with Tavistock close behind but ISCA closed the tournament with an impressive win, achieving the highest number of goals and so the trophy was Exeter bound. Overall, it was an extremely successful day. All thanks to the Okehampton Club organiser, Louise Weller, the support of the umpires, who for a change remained dry and the sportsmanship of all the players travelling from far and wide. The sun shone, everyone played outstanding hockey, good practice and preparation for the forthcoming league season. Okehampton look forward to hosting the tournament again next year when the home team can attempt to bring home the trophy.
