Devon B Tavistock firsts v Thorveton TOP of the table Tavistock firsts entertained second placed Thorverton at The Ring in the Devon League. Without captain Shaun Daymond and pace bowler James McGahey, this was going to be a challenge for previously unbeaten Tavistock. Thorverton won the toss and decided to bat on what looked a belter of a wicket. Tavistock were looking for a total of more than 240, to bowl with discipline and make a positive contribution in the field. The Tavistock team worked hard to achieve its aims and after the first PowerPlay, Thorverton were only on 22 runs and at drinks 48 runs off 15 overs - there were no wickets taken but lots of dot balls bowled and the score well under par. The set batters started to accelerate and at 161-1 with 11 overs to go were in a strong position to push on to 250. Aaron Churchill threw down the stumps in dismissing the dangerous opener who was on 84 and so started a run of wickets, with good bowling, catching and poor batting resulting in Thorverton finishing their innings on what was considered a below par 221 all out. All the home bowlers bowled well, with four wickets for Jamie Stephens, three for Tim Pope and two for Thokozani Peter. There were no demons in the wicket but Churchill went early. However Ian Gray and Tim Pope kept the innings moving while the new ball stopped swinging. Seven batsmen got starts and into double figures, then found ways to get out. A real impetus changer was David Milligan blasting three sixes in short time. This kick started the run chase and for the final 14 overs of the match, the Tavy batters easily scored at seven an over to win with an over to spare. Jamie Stephens with 44 not out continued his excellent run of form and Thokozani Peter showed what a good finisher he is. This was another good win as Tavistock move 28 points clear at the top of the league.
