YELVERTON Golf Club men’s team had a superb victory in the final of the Parker Trophy, which was held at Bovey Tracey GC on September 16.

This Devon County Inter-Club Scratch knockout competition had both foursome and single matches.

Yelverton, led by non playing captain Bernie Pennington and club vice captain Bryan Gullick, played last year’s winners Torquay.

Torquay pair Lester Barnes and Steve Thorne took the first match against Yelverton’s Dan Rosevear and Matt Cooper on the 17th hole.

It was 2-0 when Peter Bicknell and Craig Passmore (Torquay) edged out Des Carty and Alex Kippen on the 18th. The last match in the foursomes was between Nathan Gilpin and Scott Pym (Torquay) and the Yelverton pairing of Ryan Acres and Mark Harrington, which was won by the latter to end the morning session. Lester Barnes and Dan Rosevear was the first singles match of the afternoon which ended with a win for Yelverton player Dan by 5-4. Alex Kippen had a 3-2 with a win over Steve Thorne.

Pete Bicknell for Torquay played some great golf against Matt Cooper which went to the wire until the 19th hole in Torquay’s favour. This was Matt’s last game as an amateur before he turns professional.

With it all-square again, Des Carty went five up against Craig Passmore but the Torquay man reduced the arrears to two before Des played with maturity and went on to clinch the match 2-1.

Mark Harrington halved with Nathan Gilpin to clinch the Yelverton victory.

Yelverton team captain Ryan Acres halved the last game with Scott Pym so it was Yelverton Golf Club who became this year’s winner of the Parker trophy in an excellent display of golf from both finalists by 5.5pts - 3.5 pts.

Yelverton vice-captain, Bryan Gullick, said: ‘A terrific performance from every member of the Yelverton team. A much deserved win against a strong and talented Torquay squad. We now have a major trophy in our cabinet and a team to be proud of — we look forward to defending it next year.’

The poor weather conditions did not deter the junior golfers for the start of the autumn ‘Golf Access’ sessions. All players achieved the next step in their wristband progression (on shooting the required score the next colour wristband is awarded — there are 9 levels of wristbands for juniors).

In first place was Nathan Keers who shot an impressive 41 — certainly ‘one to watch’ for the future.
