DESPITE mist and mizzle 118 visiting and 62 home players played in the popular Tavistock Golf Club veterans’ open.
In the home competition Dave Johns and Peter Leverton took first place with 43 points on countback from Les Tocher and Brian Goble. With 42pts Angus McPhie and Colin Rogers took third place on count back from Ken Kendalland and Dick Spackman and Gary Pumford and Keith Stenhouse. Nearest the pin: Colin Rogers; nearest the pin in two: John Berry; longest drive, Bob Small.
Scoring was also tight in the visitors’ competition but the Whitsand Bay pair T Stevens and M Richards took the honours with 46pts. In second place S Lewis and C Davis from Teign Valley scored 44pts on count back from S Lewis and C Davis (Boringdon Park) and P Tregellas and T Landau (Teign Valley). Nearest the pin D Birth (Royal North Devon); nearest the pin in two: D Pagett (East Devon); longest drive, B Medlam (Saunton).
Chris Morley thanked all those who had made the day a success - despite the weather! ‘But’, he said, ‘my special thanks to John Thewlis for all his hard work in organising the open’.
The weather though was not kind to the ladies who played for the Alice Rose Bowl. Hilary Picton was first in division one with 37pts; second Dawn Dennis 36 pts, third Cheryl Hall 35 pts. First in division two with an excellent 41pts and winner of the Bowl was Hazel Cash; in second Sybil Cole 38pts and third Liz Loosmore 36pts. Jean Thomas with 34pts was first in division three on countback from Sue Eastwood; third was Anne Dawson on 31pts.
The winner of the Lady Veterans’ 25th Anniversary Trophy was Shirley Trevena with 39pts and runner up Carolyn Crawford with 38pts.
In the Roland Bailey Mixed competition Dave and Peggy Burge won the trophy with 43pts, second Mike and Tracey Sutcliffe 42pts and third with 40pts Mike Apps and Helen Heywood.
