THERE is a lot of training going on in and around Tavistock as runners prepare for West Devon's biggest road race, the Tavy 7, which takes place this year on Sunday, October 26, starting at noon.

This seven mile run has been a feature of the local running scene for more than 20 years and is regaining the popularity it had a few years ago when starting from Middlemoor.

It now starts on the edge of Plasterdown so is more user friendly, and runners will not find the course difficult as it winds through Sampford Spiney with great views of the moor and surrounding scenery. Entries are pouring in and the organisers, Tavistock Athletic Club, hopes that the race will see more than 400 people take part this year.

Runners are asked to enter in advance to avoid delays on the day. Entry forms can be obtained from the main race sponsors, Gibbs Kirby, estate agents in Market Road, and also Active Co, Duke St. Tavistock, but online entry is possible via the race website http://www.tavy7.co.uk">www.tavy7.co.uk up to Tuesday, October 21.

Entry on the day will be permitted but will cost £2 more and competitors are asked to arrive by 11.15am to ensure that the race starts promptly. Full details of the race can be found on the race website, with prizes in all five.

There is also a race over 1.5 miles for the Tavy 7 Cup with teams representing primary schools in the area, and a fun run of one mile, which anyone can enter — these will start at 12.05pm and will be run off road over grassy tracks on Plasterdown. Race HQ will be signed from the bottom of Down Road in Tavistock.
