Southern one
Torbay 2
Okehampton 6
OKEHAMPTON men’s first team travelled to Torbay for what is always a tough away fixture. However, they travelled prepared with a full squad with the aim to maintain their status at the top of the Southern one table.
Play was heavily contested with Torbay rushing Okehampton when in possession.
Composure by the defence of Rob Hall, James Rogers, Simon Bourne and Ross Davidson enabled Okehampton to remain calm and were soon rewarded with a short corner. A drag flick routine was perfectly executed with Sam Whalley converting the first score.
Torbay fought back with tenacity and following a series of short corners saved by George Morgan, a conversion brought the scores level.
Nick Luxton began to control distribution and linked with wingers Jack Watson and Jayden Reid to take advantage of the open play, feeding forwards Luke Miller and Whalley. A shoot blocked by a Torbay leg resulted in a penalty flick, which was convincingly slotted away by Whalley. Miller added a reverse hit to take Okehampton 3-1 at the break.
Aware Torbay would be looking to fight back the visitors were eager to command their lead and scored first in the final half. A lung bursting run by Watson found Miller in the centre of the D and at full stretch Miller deflected the ball into the net. As play became increasingly open Torbay took advantage of a counter attack to secure their last score of the day.
Captain Josh Speak and Brett Lawson boosted the team and assisted with delivering Whalley with two ‘one on one’ opportunities against a busy Torbay goal keeper. Whalley beat the goalkeeper for the first but was brought down by the next.
Whalley converted his fourth of the match securing Okehampton the three points.
