Fred Binks Cup

TAVISTOCK AFC RESERVES 2

ST STEPHENS BOROUGH 2

(St Stephens Borough win 5-4 on penalties

TAVISTOCK AFC reserves welcomed St Stephens Borough to Langsford Park on Saturday (February 16) for a Fred Binks Cup fixture.

‘We started the game at a very good tempo and put pressure on the opponent’s defence without making a clear cut chance,’ said Mike Bridgeman, joint manager of Tavistock reserves. ‘We broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when a corner wasn’t cleared and Billy McGowan finished with a half volley. Close to going in to half time 1-0 up, however, a good run by one of their midfielders resulted in him toe-poking home at the near post.

‘Fortunately, we then survived going down 2-1, when sloppy defending resulted in a penalty awarded to St Stephens, but this was saved by debutant keeper Archie Walsh.

‘We tried hard to score the winner in the second half to no avail, although came close when Reece Shanley hit the crossbar and on more than one occasion we had the ball cleared off the line.

‘Unfortunately we failed to score and it went straight to pens – which I’m not a lover of. Sadly we lost the penalty shoot out 5-4. We would like to wish St Stephens Borough all the best in the next round.’
