Exeter University 3

Okehampton Argyle 1

THIS was always going to be a tough fixture for bottom of the table Argyle against an in-form University side who are now in fifth place in the league. Okehampton did made a game of it although the result was never really in doubt.

The first period of play was fairly even although the University’s passing was far more accurate and after 20 minutes, Argyle’s defence failed to clear a cross and leading scorer Ben Mogg fired the students into the lead from 15 yards.

Nine minutes later, Argyle defender Chris Wills fluffed a fairly routine clearance and the ball fell at the feet of the University’s Andrew Farley, who made no mistake from close in.

Many teams would have thrown in the towel at this stage, but Argyle fought back. A few minutes before the interval, they thought they had a penalty when Jason Cordice put Roger Bonaparte through with just the keeper to beat only to see, they claimed, the striker pulled down from behind. Unfortunately for them the referee waved play on.

Appropriately for Hallowe’en, some of Oke’s defending was frightening and the game was killed off six minutes into the second half; Argyle gave the ball away as they tried to play out of defence and the students increased their lead as Mogg slotted home his second of the match.

Argyle still kept plugging on and Brad Ausden came close with two long range efforts and then ten minutes from time, Okehampton were rewarded for their efforts when substitute Jake Rowe ran onto a through ball from Adam Mortimer and fired past the University keeper for a fine goal.

Argyle had to say farewell to top scorer Jason Cordice at the end of this match as after much soul searching, he has decided to transfer to premier division Camelford. Okehampton thank Jason for all his efforts and goals over the past season and a half and wish him well in higher level football.
