IN fine, sunny weather earlier this month, eleven teams from St Peter’s, Horrabridge, Whitchurch, Tavistock, St Andrew’s and Bere Alston took part in the Tavistock Area Primary (large) Schools’ Football Tournament.

Horrabridge A and Whitchurch A topped Pool A with Horrabridge going through to the final on the amount of goals scored – ten to Whitchurch’s eight. Both teams won all their games against St Andrew’s B and C teams, St Peter’s and Tavistock B and drew 0-0 with each other.

Pool B was a tighter pool with no team winning all their games. Tavistock beat Whitchurch B, Horrabridge B and St Andrew’s A but lost to Bere Alston 2-0. They took top spot with nine points. Bere Alston and Horrabridge B both ended up with seven points, with Bere Alston scoring more goals.

In the final between Horrabridge and Tavistock, the former started off brightly, scoring two quick goals in the first half. Tavistock came back after the restart and pulled one back but could not equalise and the gold medals went to the delighted Horrabridge players, with Tavistock receiving silver. They will both go through to the West Devon Finals to meet the winning Okehampton Area Schools’ teams.

Organisers thanked Allen and Mark Lewis and Martin Exley-Deane who officiated over the teams and Tavistock Community Football Club at Crowndale for providing the excellent facilities.
